South Korea said on Thursday that a possible visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to North Korea could help revive diplomatic engagement between Pyongyang and Washington, including the prospect of a new summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, Xi could travel to Pyongyang as early as next week. The report, citing South Korean government sources, noted that Chinese security and protocol teams had recently visited the North Korean capital in preparation for the trip.

Speaking to reporters in Seoul, South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young said that if Xi’s visit takes place, discussions surrounding a possible Kim–Trump summit would “certainly” emerge. However, he stressed that Beijing has not officially confirmed the visit.

Chung described the current geopolitical climate in Northeast Asia as a period of major transformation, pointing to a series of high-level diplomatic engagements involving the United States, China, and Russia.

His comments came after Trump concluded a three-day visit to China last week, followed by Russian President Vladimir Putin making a two-day trip to Beijing earlier this week.

“We must now carefully consider strategic options that can ensure stability, peace, and shared prosperity amid the shifting geopolitical landscape surrounding the Korean Peninsula,” Chung stated.

Responding to questions about the reported visit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun reaffirmed the close relationship between China and North Korea, describing the two countries as “good friends and close neighbors.”

He added that Beijing and Pyongyang have maintained a long tradition of friendly exchanges, which he said contribute to regional peace and stability, though he declined to provide further details.

China and North Korea are also marking the 65th anniversary of the signing of their comprehensive cooperation treaty this year.

The potential visit by Xi comes amid intensified diplomatic activity between major global powers and could signal renewed momentum for dialogue on the Korean Peninsula.
